The New England Patriots lost some key pieces on their offensive line at the start of free agency, so losing another one in Trent Brown would have been a tough blow as they try to build a better roster around young quarterback Mac Jones. Luckily for the Patriots, Brown will be back, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapaport. It's a two-year deal for Brown.

New England saw starting left guard Ted Karras walk to the Cincinnati Bengals and then traded starting right guard Shaq Mason to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to help clear cap space. Brown explored his options in free agency, including the Seattle Seahawks, but ultimately he's coming back to New England to man a tackle position.

This lengthens Brown's second stint with this franchise. The Patriots first acquired Brown from the San Francisco 49ers for the 2018 season, and he helped them win a Super Bowl. The tackle then cashed in big with the Raiders, but his 2020 campaign was marred by health issues.

New England traded for Brown again ahead of this past season. He appeared in just nine games, though, and the health will be a concern moving forward. Still, Brown is effective when he's healthy, and Jones should be happy to have him back.

The Patriots still have more work to do rebuilding this offensive line, but that would have been made even more difficult if Brown went elsewhere after losing out on La'el Collins. This is a signing that really needed to happen for Bill Belichick and Co., health questions and all.
