A week has passed since former New England Patriots wide receiver Reche Caldwell was killed in his hometown of Tampa, Florida.

The search for Caldwell's killer(s) continues. Tampa police said on Saturday they “have not yet identified a person of interest,” per FOX 13 News.

Police initially confirmed there was a homicide, but would not say Reche Caldwell had been killed. However, TMZ later reported Caldwell was “targeted,” and Caldwell's mother, Deborah, said her son was “ambushed” in front of his home prior to going on a date with his girlfriend.

Reche Caldwell had some trouble in life after football. He went to prison on a drug charge in 2014, and had also pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit health care fraud. Caldwell was due for sentencing later this month prior to his death.

The former Florida Gator was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 2002, spending four seasons in San Diego before heading to New England.

Reche Caldwell had his best year with the Patriots in 2006, tallying career-high marks in receptions (61), receiving yards (760) and touchdown catches (4). But that would be the pinnacle of Caldwell's career. He signed a one-year deal with the Washington Redskins ahead of the 2007 season, but played just eight games. Caldwell was out of the league shortly thereafter.

Former collegiate and professional teammates mourned Reche Caldwell's death last weekend, remembering him fondly as an amicable person and teammate.

Reche Caldwell's family is still hoping justice will be served. But the trail has gone somewhat cold as Tampa police continue to search for persons of interest.
