New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady didn’t play in the team’s preseason opener against the Washington Redskins last week. But he sounds as if he’s ready to make an appearance in this week’s assignment, which just so happens to be a Super Bowl rematch.

Brady said on WEEI that he “absolutely” plans to play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night.

Brady has reportedly been dealing with a sore back which factored into his absence against the Redskins and has limited his workload in practice. But much like head coach Bill Belichick, Brady didn’t really delve too much into specifics when asked about the aforementioned back injury. Although, he did indicate that he’s doing well.

“I’m doing well,” Brady said. “I am doing really well. You always have little things that you’re working through.”

Brady’s presence or absence in preseason doesn’t really make much of a difference for the Patriots. At this point in his career, the 41-year-old’s health is clearly the much more important factor to consider heading into the season. Trotting him out for meaningless preseason snaps only increases the risk of injury, which is the last thing the team needs.

But still, the fact that Brady seems ready to go out and play after a slight injury setback has to be encouraging news for the Patriots, who would obviously prefer their quarterback to be as close to 100 as possible. Hopefully, the reigning NFL MVP can get through his couple of series against the Eagles unscathed and continue his preparation for the season without any more setbacks.
