Some people believe that the New England Patriots could be a candidate to land Cam Newton in free agency, but there's a possibility that the Patriots target someone in the draft. As a matter of fact, New England is scouting Florida International quarterback James Morgan.

Early in free agency, the Patriots were faced with the sudden reality that Tom Brady would be continuing his career elsewhere. With Brady no longer in the picture, that left Jarrett Stidham and Cody Kessler as the only quarterbacks on the roster.

However, since then, the team has signed Brian Hoyer and released Kessler. Seeing that Stidham and Hoyer are the only quarterbacks remaining, the Patriots could be in the market for a quarterback. More specifically, be in the market for a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Following Brady's departure, some players in New England have shared their confidence in Stidham as the starter. On the other hand, the Patriots know that if Stidham sputters, they need a backup plan. In that case, Morgan makes sense for New England in this year's draft.

Morgan, who was raised in Green Bay, attempts to model his game after Brett Favre. At Florida International, Morgan combined for 5,312 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in his two seasons there.

While he isn't one of the coveted prospects, Morgan is definitely an intriguing one due to his impressive accuracy. Of course, the Patriots enter the draft with a grand total of 12 picks altogether.

That should give them plenty of opportunities to draft Morgan or another quarterback. Rather than sign a free agent, the Patriots are focused on getting younger at the quarterback position.
