Despite rumors of a potential trade that suddenly popped up last week, tight end Rob Gronkowski is still a member of the New England Patriots. Gronk himself has dismissed those reports as “fake news.”

It would go a long way toward securing Gronk’s future in Foxboro if the Patriots could finally finalize his restructured new deal, which has been in the works for some time now.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, that new contract is indeed “likely” to arrive, but “nothing is imminent” as there are still several details left to iron out. He points out a potential source of contention in the negotiations, which is whether Gronk’s likely raise will be incentive-based or guaranteed regardless of performance.

Florio also adds that while a trade is still possibly on the table for the star tight end, a couple of sources confirmed that last week’s rumor regarding Gronk and whatever involvement Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, and owner Robert Kraft had in such a trade, were simply untrue.

It’s never wise to rule anything out completely with the Patriots, but it would be quite a shock if they decided to trade Gronk. With Brady’s window for playing at an elite level growing smaller each year, having Gronk gives the team a better chance to win this year than anything they can get back for him.

The fact that they’re expected to come to terms on a deal at some point is indicative of their desire to keep him around for at least one more year. Chances are the next big news regarding Gronk is that they do get that new contract worked out instead of a blockbuster trade involving him.
