The New Orleans Pelicans have tried all season to escape their mediocrity, and it appears that the team is finally heading into the right direction. Against the Bulls on Monday night, DeMarcus Cousins scored 44 points, 24 rebounds, and 10 assists. This feat has made Cousins the first player with at least 40 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists since Wilt Chamberlain back in 1968 nearly 50 years ago.

Down by 18 points in the fourth quarter, the Pelicans stormed back after an outstanding performance from Cousins to win the game 132-128 in double overtime. After a pair of free throws from Justin Holiday, the Bulls and Pelicans headed to overtime where Anthony Davis fouled out with two minutes left in the overtime period. From that point on, Cousins dominated the game with his scoring and rebounding prowess. When the Pelicans forced a second overtime, Cousins scored seven points including a pair of free throws that sealed the game for good.

The Pelicans' frontcourt features two of the best players at their positions. Davis, at his peak, is unstoppable on the offensive end. However, Cousins has shown that he has a better all-around game. He can score at a high level. He can rebound the ball better than anyone at his position, and he is a gifted passer and shooter. Without Davis, the Pelicans were able to rely on Cousins, and he won them the game.

The Pelicans have won six of their last eight games. They are starting to get back on track in order to make the postseason for the first time since 2015. Hopefully, Cousins can build off of his historic night and help his team win more games down the road.
