Zion Williamson's health is the most important thing for the New Orleans Pelicans moving forward. Unfortunately, it has also been a very troubling and obstacle-filled aspect of the young star's career. A foot injury has caused him to miss all of the 2021-22 season so far.
The Pelicans announced that Williamson will continue his rehabilitation away from the team. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Portland will be the destination for Williamson to continue recovering.
Williamson addressed his rehabilitation process in the Pelicans' press release:
“As you can imagine, this has been a very difficult process for me,” said Williamson. “I know there’s work to be done in my recovery before I can safely return to the court, but I will continue to put in the time necessary so I can get back on the floor with my team and represent Pelicans fans and the city of New Orleans at the highest level. Basketball means everything to me, and I am thankful for the Pelicans organization and everyone who has surrounded me with love and support throughout this journey – my family, friends, teammates, coaches, staff, fans, and everybody who has stood behind me and uplifted me when I needed it most.”
Keeping track of Williamson's progress and protocols for rehabilitation is dizzying. He was cleared for basketball activities in November only to be shut down in early December. With January already here and no sign of when New Orleans will have Williamson back, it has been a very tough trail for the former top overall pick.
With Williamson out indefinitely, the Pelicans have gone 13-25 and are second-to-last in the Western Conference.
