Cameron Young is one of the PGA Tour's most powerful ball-strikers. When his putter gets rolling, he becomes an all-world talent. The 27-year-old's ceiling was on historic display on Moving Day at the Travelers Championship.

Amid the humid conditions in Cromwell, CT., Young flirted with Jim Furyk's 2016 mark for lowest single-round score in PGA Tour history — a final-round 58, also set at TPC River Highlands. Instead, Young settled for par on the 18th hole to complete an 11-under 59, the 13th sub-60 scorecard of all-time.

“All of a sudden like everything was going in,” said Young. “I had a putt for 59 on 18, which was a blast.”

Young started and stayed as hot as the 90-degree temperatures in New England. He came out of the gates with birdies on the first two holes, then holed out for eagled from 142 yards on the par-4 third. He birdied the par-4 fourth.

He nearly aced the par-3 eighth, birdied the par-4 ninth and par-5 13th. His eagle on the par-4 15th — yes, two eagles on par 4s — and birdie on par-4 17th set him up to match Furyk's mark.

Young's wayward drive off the 18th tee landed in the fairway bunker, and he placed his approach in the rough, short of the green. He chipped to about nine feet of the hole, and lipped in the putt to secure a place in golf lore.

“I did a little bit, kind of like, 10, 11, 12. Not necessarily ‘sub 60,' but just like, ‘really good,'” Young said about when the possibility of making history crept into his mind. “Then didn't really think much about it until the putt went in on 15. Then I hit two really good putts on 16 and 17. And then obviously 18 as well.”

Young is one of the PGA Tour's elite bombers, but his work around the greens has hindered his results. Young —ranked no. 23 in the Official World Golf Ranking but 60th on DataGolf — sits 49th in strokes gained: tee-to-green, 31st in strokes gained: off-the-tee, and 9th in driving on the PGA Tour in 2024. He entered the Travelers ranked 137th in putting and 130th in strokes gained: around-the-green.

Young was saved by his in-between game at TPC River Highlands. He hit just six of 14 fairways, but still made 15 of 18 greens in regulation. Of the morning wave, Young ranked first in scrambling, first in strokes gained: approach and fifth in putting. He hit just 24 putts during his round.

After shooting 2-0ver on Thursday and 4-under on Friday, Young began Saturday 11 strokes back of Tom Kim. At the time Young walked off the 18th green, he was tied with Kim, who had yet to begin his third round. A host of major champions sitting at 11-under, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Collin Morikawa, were just teeing off.

Scheffler carded the most recent 59 on the PGA Tour, at The Northern Trust in 2020.

“The last two days have been great,” said Young. “I played some really nice golf. I think like in terms of lifetime achievement, there's definitely some things that go before [the 59] for me. It's one day. It's one day that you shot a million under. It's very cool and I'm thankful that my name is on that very short list, but there's whole tournaments that I've played that I'm probably, that I probably would still put above it.”

Young has made 15 of 16 cuts this year, though he's only truly contended at one event, finishing runner-up at the Valspar Championship. His three other top-10s came at the WM Phoenix Open (T8), the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches (T4) and the Masters (T9).

The 2021-22 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year is still looking for his first professional victory.
