Phil Mickelson's recent comments on the Saudi Super Golf League have created quite a controversy for the 51-year-old, who has faced significant backlash over the past few days. Author Alan Shipnuck revealed an excerpt from his upcoming book, “Phil: The Rip-Roaring (and Unauthorized!) Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar,” in which Mickelson made some damning comments about Saudi Arabia and the upstart golf league. Fellow PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy was asked about Mickelson's comments on Sunday and made his opinion on the matter very clear, ripping into Mickelson for his remarks, via Zephyr Melton.

“I don't want to kick someone while he's down obviously, but I thought they were naive, selfish, egotistical, ignorant. A lot of words to describe that interaction he had with Shipnuck,” McIlroy said on Sunday.

Considering this was McIlroy not trying to kick Mickelson while he's down, we can only imagine what he'd have said if he wasn't holding back. McIlroy didn't try to sugarcoat what he thought of Mickelson's unfavorable comments, using a barrage of adjectives to describe his feelings.

Mickelson's conversation with Shipnuck allegedly took place in November, and the full remarks can be read via the Fire Pit Collective, where the author initially posted the excerpt with Mickelson's quotes. Shipnuck later revealed that as many as 20 PGA Tour players had committed to joining the Saudi-backed golf startup league.

McIlroy wasn't the only player to weigh in on Mickelson's comments, as fellow PGA Tour star Justin Thomas also ripped into the 51-year-old over his controversial remarks.
