Phil Mickelson made history by becoming the oldest golfer ever to win a major championship. āLeftyā was then trying to keep his momentum going in the Charles Schwab Challenge at The Colonial. However, his first day didn't go well at all: He finished the day at three over par.
Mickelson didn't seem to be bothered. He gave a hilarious answer after his performance:
"I shot 3-over, butā¦.I won the PGA, soā¦"
Talk your talk, Phil š

Let them know, Phil.
To the surprise of nobody, he is wildly unfazed by his performance on Day 1 at The Colonial. After all, his previous accomplishment will leave him on a high wave of momentum for a long time.
Obviously, Phil wanted to perform well and show the world that it wasn't just a one-time thing by winning the PGA Championship.
Earlier in May, Mickelson posted a tweet that potentially stirred his improbable comeback en route to his historic victory:
Iāve failed many times in my life and career and because of this Iāve learned a lot. Instead of feeling defeated countless times, Iāve used it as fuel to drive me to work harder. So today, join me in accepting our failures. Letās use them to motivate us to work even harder.

Then he made history just weeks after that post. Now, after the first day of the Charles Schwab Challenge and a total nightmare performance, it's not looking too good for Phil Mickelson in his first event after his landmark major. It was obviously a quick turnaround, and in many ways, the emotional hangover from his historic win is in many ways a harder challenge to address than any strictly physical challenge he might have to endure this week. The setup at Colonial isn't nearly as tough or demanding as the layout at a major tournament. Jordan Spieth and Sergio Garcia shared the first-round lead after shooting seven-under par scores.
As a point of comparison, Phil Mickelson won in Kiawah Island this past weekend with a six-under score for the whole tournament.
This was a rough day at The Colonial for Phil. Nonetheless, he doesn't care one bit and is still celebrating his victory from the PGA Championship.
Never change, Phil Mickelson, never change.
