Why The Phillies Will Cover The Spread/Win

Sanchez has made nine starts this season, and he is pitching well. He has a 3.31 ERA in those starts, a 1.45 WHIP, and 47 strikeouts in 49 innings pitched. He is pitching especially well in his three starts in May. In those games, Sanchez has thrown 19.2 innings and has an ERA under 3.00. He has also struck out 18, and he is inducing a lot of ground ball outs. Sanchez should be able to continue this against a weaker Rockies team.

The Rockies are starting Ty Blach in this game, and he is getting hit a round a little bit. This is going to work in the favor of the Phillies, especially in Colorado, because of their ability to hit the ball right now. In the month of May, the Phillies are batting .262 with a slugging percentage of .761. Against left-handed pitchers this season, the Phillies are batting .263 with a .748 OPS. The Phillies should be able to crush the ball in this game, and continue their winning ways.

Why The Rockies Will Cover The Spread/Win

Colorado is actually playing pretty good baseball right now. They are still not great, but in the month of May, the Rockies own a 9-10 record (heading into May 23). That is under .500, but it is much better than their 6-19 record in April. The Rockies have also won a majority of their last 10 games. In total, Colorado is just playing better baseball, and it is showing. That needs to continue in this game if they want to beat the Phillies in this game. If they can have a good game, which has been happening a lot lately, the Rockies will win this game.

The Rockies lost two one-run games in the first series against the Phillies. They played the Phillies well, but just could not pull through in the end. Those one-run games do give the Rockies the cover, though. If looking at the +1.5 spread, the Rockies covered it twice in the first series. If Colorado can find a way to shut down the Phillies on the mound and push a few runs across offensively, the Rockies will be able to at least cover the spread.

Final Phillies-Rockies Prediction & Pick

The Phillies are the better team here, there is no question about that. Sanchez is pitching well, and the Phillies are hitting the ball very well. In their last 40 games this season (heading into May 23), the Phillies have a record of 31-9. That has them in first place in the AL East, as well. I do not expect anything to change in this game. I will be taking the Phillies to not only win this game but cover the spread, as well.
