Why The Phillies Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Phillies are fighting for the top spot in the MLB and have a 46-22 record. They have lost three out of their last four games. The offense is top 10 in the MLB, while their pitching is the second-best, only behind the Yankees. On offense, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, JT Realmuto, Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh, Nick Castellanos, and Alec Bohm have been the big standouts on a great offense. The pitching of Ranger Suarez, Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sanchez, and Spencer Turnbull have made up one great pitching staff. The Phillies have been a force this season and this is a huge series for them in Boston.

The Phillies are starting Taijuan Walker on the mound where he has a 3-1 record, a 5.40 ERA, and a 1.45 WHIP. Through 43.1 innings, Walker has allowed 27 runs on 47 hits with 16 walks and 36 strikeouts. The Phillies are 4-4 in the eight games that he's started in this season. Walker has been the weak link for a dominant Phillies pitching staff. This is a difficult matchup for him with his struggles because the Orioles offense has been great this season.

The offense for the Phillies has been one of the best this season. The Phillies are sixth in the MLB in team batting average at .254 after finishing last season at .256. Alec Bohm and Bryce Harper lead the way for the Phillies behind the plate in most of the batting categories. Bohm leads in batting average at .286, in RBI at 52, and in total hits at 52. Harper then leads in home runs at 15 and in OBP at .391. This should be a difficult matchup against Grayson Rodriguez for the Orioles because he has had a great season up to this point.

Why The Orioles Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Orioles come into this series with a 45-23 record and they just lost a game that broke a six-game winning streak. Their offense has jumped back into the top 10, while their pitching is a top-three staff in the MLB. The Orioles have so much young talent behind the plate with Jordan Westburg, Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Anthony Santander, Cedric Mullins, Colton Cowser, and Ryan Mountcastle making up the bulk of it, but there's more too. They improved their pitching this past offseason by adding Corbin Burnes to go with Grayson Rodriguez, Cole Irvin, Kyle Bradish, and Albert Suarez. The Orioles were the best team in the AL last season and somehow improved this season.

The Orioles are starting Grayson Rodriguez on the mound and he has a 7-2 record, a 3.27 ERA, and a 1.23 WHIP. Through 63.1 innings, he has allowed 24 runs on 56 hits with 22 walks and 71 strikeouts up to this point in the season. The Orioles are 8-3 in his 11 starts this season. Rodriguez has been a huge key for the Orioles' success this season on the mound and is one of the best pieces in a great pitching staff. This is a difficult matchup because of how well the Phillies offense has played, even with the great year Rodriguez is having.

The Orioles' offense has been one of the best in the MLB and has made a jump back into the top 10 of the MLB. They are 10th in team batting average at .248 after finishing last season at .259. The offense is led by Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson leads the way in most of the batting categories. Adley Rutschman leads the way in batting average at .294, in 50 RBI, and in total hits at 78. Then, Henderson leads the way in home runs at 21 and OBP at .372. They get a favorable matchup against Walker on the mound because the Phillies are capable of mashing and Walker has struggled this season.

Final Phillies-Orioles Prediction & Pick

The deciding factor in this game is pitching. The Orioles have the better pitcher with Rodriguez in this game when compared to Walker for the Phillies. These offenses are both capable of taking over games, but thanks to Walker the Orioles should win and cover at home against the Phillies.
