The Detroit Pistons have announced the official signing of free agent point guard Dwight Buycks to a two-way contract. They will give him the chance to compete for a roster spot in training camp, and could still keep his rights by sending him to the G-League should he not make final cut.

Even with the recent news about Reggie Jackson’s availability for the start of training camp, Buycks’ signing can be considered additional insurance for them, as well as having someone giving their mainstays a run for their money. It could also help bring out the best from their players, and make their camp even more competitive.

Buycks went undrafted back in 2011, and has since had a journeyman career. He is a D-League veteran, having played for Tulsa 66ers, Bakersfield Jam and Oklahoma City Blue, and has also had short stints with the Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Lakers before. He last played professionally for the Fujian Sturgeons from the Chinese Basketball Association, just last season.

The 28-year-old Marquette product then became part of the Dallas Mavericks squad in the Summer League last July, where he impressed a lot of scouts and helped them win the championship. That paved the way for him to get noticed and be given this chance to make the Pistons lineup for next season.
