Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey was very instrumental in selling Joe Johnson on coming to Detroit, according to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press.

Johnson, who won the MVP award in the BIG3, agreed to a partially guaranteed deal with the Pistons on Thursday:

Joe Johnson last played in the NBA in 2017-18, appearing in 55 games with the Utah Jazz and Houston Rockets. A seven-time NBA All-Star, Johnson has career averages of 16.0 points in 1,276 games with the Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat, Jazz and Rockets.

The Pistons will bring Johnson off the bench and hope he can score some points in bunches. Detroit made the playoffs last season for the first time since 2016, but got swept by the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round. The team will go as far as All-Stars Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond can take them, but it's always good to have bench depth in the NBA.

With Johnson in the fold, the Pistons now have three guys who can come off the bench and score at a high level. Detroit also signed former MVP Derrick Rose and veteran small forward Markieff Morris in free agency this offseason. Rose put up 18.0 points per game for the Minnesota Timberwolves last season, while Morris has a career scoring average of 11.6 points.
