After being assigned to their D-League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive, last week because of his poor play this season, many have speculated that the Detroit Pistons are now ready to move on from their lottery pick last year, Stanley Johnson.

The 20-year-old Arizona product has failed to impress so far this season after showing glimpses of his potential a year ago. He has struggled to crack Stan Van Gundy‘s rotation and has been averaging a dismal 3.5 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 0.9 assists in 14.3 minutes per game.

However, Johnson's low production has not lessened the interest he's been getting from other teams as they believe he just needs some playing time to regain his confidence. He can be a defensive stopper especially for opposing teams' shooting guards and small forwards and  has a high basketball I.Q.

Despite receiving some inquiries for Johnson, the Pistons have resisted all of them and are looking for him to further improve his game and get more playing time with the Drive. Johnson also recently revealed that he had a conversation with his coach prior to the move and that he agreed to it to get a feel of the game once again.

“I was with it because I want to play. It’s tough to watch games go by and obviously you want to play and catch a feel. I haven’t played (this much) in months so just to get a feel and hope I get another opportunity in the NBA and I’ll be able to play.”

It will be interesting to see how Johnson will play with the Pistons after his stint in the D-League. It is also worth monitoring what the Pistons are planning to do with him should he still find it difficult to fit in their system and how much longer they can resist offers for the 6-foot-7 wingman.
