The Detroit Pistons are trying to maintain their status as a playoff contender in the Eastern Conference, but they would also like to shed some payroll in the process. According to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press, the Pistons are exploring their options with respect to a potential trade involving combo guard Langston Galloway.

Two league sources tell the Free Press the Pistons are very open to moving Galloway, which isn’t surprising. The Pistons have engaged teams on Galloway for months, but his price tag (one year, $7.3 million) remains a challenging roadblock.

Galloway averaged 8.4 points and 2.1 rebounds while appearing in 80 games for the Pistons last season, but he has not been as proficient from beyond the arc as Detroit has hoped (35.5 percent last year).

The Pistons are already on the hook for over $135 million in salary, and even with Reggie Jackson's expiring contract they will probably owe over $100 million to a select number of players should both Andre Drummond and Tony Snell pick up their player options.

Detroit could certainly use better guar play, which is one of the reasons that they signed Derrick Rose to a two-year deal this summer. However, Galloway does not have a clear lane to playing time.

With Rose in the rotation and Luke Kennard hoping to see more run after the Pistons picked up his option for next season, Galloway is merely a depth piece, which does not seem to warrant the $7 million price tag.

The Pistons have the opportunity to make aggressive roster moves, but that process only starts in earnest if the can find a suitor for Galloway.
