Former Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper is set to enter the fourth year of his rookie deal with a fifth-year option looming on the contract. It has brought attention toward a possible extension being discussed on both sides at some point this offseason.

Up to this point, there hasn't been much discussion around that possibility since the end of the 2017 campaign. On Friday, general manager Reggie McKenzie voiced that he did speak with Cooper' agent about his contract situation, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

“We’ve been in contact with his agent,” McKenzie said. “I don’t want to put anything out there, don’t want to put the cart before the horse so to speak, but we like Amari.”

If there is anything to take away from these comments is that the Raiders do have interest in keeping Cooper on board for the long haul an eventual new deal. In the meantime, it does put in play that the team will pick up the fifth-year option on his deal worth $13.9 million for the 2019 season.

Cooper has quickly ingrained himself as one of the primary assets in the passing game as the top receiving option. The Raiders have much stock that the 23-year-old could be a superstar talent at the position for them over the next decade as a key piece of their offensive game plan.

He may be coming off a disappointing 2017 season that was impacted by his inconsistent play and injuries, Cooper has proven to be a promising talent. Prior to that, he had strung together back-to-back years to start his NFL career with at least 70 catches, 1,000 receiving yards, and five touchdown receptions.

Cooper has demonstrated to possess the talent to become one of the top wideouts in the league which makes keeping him aboard for the next several years one of the primary focuses for the franchise to get a new deal in place. There doesn't appear to be any rush from the Raiders, but it's something that could be worked out somewhere down the line.
