A lot has been made of the Los Angeles Rams’ big-name offseason additions. The new cornerback duo of Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib, in particular, have garnered much attention. But Talib has been impressed with what he’s seen from one of the holdovers in the Rams secondary: safety Lamarcus Joyner.

As Dan Graziano of ESPN notes, Joyner’s game reminds Talib of Seattle Seahawks All-Pro safety Earl Thomas.

“He reminds me of Earl Thomas. He’s sideline-to-sideline. They throw fades, he comes out of the post, and any sideline, he gets to that fade. So he allows corners to be a little bit more greedy, when I know my post safety’s going to get there on the fade. He’s got a great burst out there in the post, man. He flies around on this field. So he reminds me of Earl Thomas, and I don’t think he gets enough credit.”

It’s certainly high praise for Talib to compare Joyner to Thomas, and it’s warranted. Joyner, who just moved to free safety full-time last season, proved to be an absolutely outstanding fit at the position. Pro Football Focus had him ranked as the third-best safety in the league last season, six spots above Thomas who came in ninth.

Since he’s playing on the franchise tag this year, Joyner will have every motivation to repeat that elite level of performance in order to get paid next offseason. If he does, he, Talib, and Peters could very well give the Rams a Legion of Boom-esque secondary this season.
