The Los Angeles Rams' heartbreaking 30-29 “Thursday Night Football” loss to the Seattle Seahawks gets worse. According to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times, outside linebacker Clay Matthews suffered a broken jaw against the Seahawks. He will have surgery and be out for at least a month.

It's unknown when on Thursday Matthews suffered the injury. Perhaps his jaw dropped after receiving a roughing the passer call that most can agree with shouldn't have been called.

Matthews signed a two-year, $9.25 million contract in free agency. Through five games, the outside linebacker has outplayed his contract, as he has tallied 6.0 sacks, 19 combined tackles, a league-leading seven tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a pass deflection.

Before signing with the Rams, Matthews spent 10 seasons with the Green Bay Packers. In doing so, he went to six Pro-Bowls, one first-team All-Pro and won a Super Bowl ring as a starter.

Matthews' injury is a big blow for the Rams defense that desperately needed edge-rushing help before his arrival. The 11-year veteran was enjoying a resurgence year before suffering the setback, and it paid dividends on the Rams' pass-rush. With Matthews out, offenses will likely put that much more attention on two-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald.

The Rams aren't expected to put Matthews on injured reserve, considering his timetable to return is less than the eight weeks of being on injured reserve.

With Matthews out, the Rams will turn to Dante Fowler and Samson Ebukam to give them production off the edge.
