As the Los Angeles Rams near the end of the regular season, they could soon get back a pivotal piece of their offensive attack.

The Rams announced on Thursday that running back Cam Akers has been designated for return. The team will now have a 21-day window to activate him from injured reserve or opt to sideline him for the remainder of the year by placing him on season-ending IR.

Akers has not featured in a single game this season due to a torn Achilles injury sustained in the offseason. The former Florida State star suffered the injury during a private workout in July. ESPN's Adam Schefter initially noted that Akers was slated to miss the entire season due to the notable injury, although the versatile back has had other plans in mind.

Akers has since been accelerating his injury rehab process over the past months to the delight of the Rams coaching staff.

In October, Rams head coach Sean McVay provided a promising update on Akers’ rehab from his Achilles injury, as he noted that the team has “definitely not” ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

Now, Akers is well on track to make his return to in-game action with the Rams. It remains to be seen on just when the team plans to give him the green light to feature in a game for the first time this season.

In Akers’ absence, the Rams have primarily relied on a one-two punch of Darrell Henderson Jr. and Sony Michel to lead the Rams rush offense. The two have combined for 1,537 yards from scrimmage and 11 total touchdowns. Adding Akers into this running back mix sure would bolster their already potent attack on the ground.

For now, the Rams have their sights set on a crucial Week 16 clash with the Minnesota Vikings.
