The New York Rangers have fortified the goaltender spots behind Igor Shesterkin. They brought in a reliable backup, Jaroslav Halak, and a third-stringer who has some history with the Rangers in the playoffs. The team announced that they signed Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Louis Domingue to a two-year deal.

Domingue was the primary goalie that the Rangers faced in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs last season after Casey DeSmith got injured in Game 1 and remained out for the rest of the postseason. He played in the final two overtime periods in the game and the rest of the serir through Game 6. Once Tristan Jarry became healthy enough to play, he took the ice for the decisive Game 7 that New York won.

With the Penguins, Domingue played just two regular-season games. The 30-year-old has played for six teams in his eight-year career, posting a 90.5 save percentage, 3.04 goals against average in 142 games. Rangers fans will remember him for eating spicy pork and broccoli in between Game 1's overtimes. The man himself announced his decision with the infamous meal.

New York has reshaped its goalie situation this offseason by trading Alexandar Georgiev to the Colorado Avalanche and signing two new faces. As Shesterkin emerges as a star and the team's most important player, having the best reserves behind him is key. Domingue comes into New York looking to compete for a championship. He will serve behind Shesterkin and Halak on the Rangers' goalie depth chart.
