As the Baltimore Ravens are just mere weeks away from kicking off their training camp schedule, they have decided to bring back a veteran pass rusher.

The Ravens announced on Thursday that they came to terms with outside linebacker Justin Houston on a one-year contract deal.

The Ravens had been on the lookout for a versatile pass rusher to add to their front seven unit for the upcoming season. For one, the team reportedly met with Jason Pierre-Paul last month, which came after he became a free agent in March following a four-season run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Still, the Ravens did not close the door on the possibility of bringing back Houston for at least one more season. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh noted in March that the team aimed to “add pass rushers,” and he mentioned that the four-time Pro Bowl linebacker remained an option on this matter.

The Ravens also assigned an unrestricted free agent tender to Houston, who logged 4.5 sacks and 34 total tackles over 15 games played for the team in the 2021 campaign. Overall, their call to place a UFA tender on him meant that if he opted to sign with another team before the opening day of training camp, such a move would then count toward the compensatory draft pick formula.

In the end, Houston has opted to stay put, which comes following a free agency period and 2022 NFL Draft where the Ravens pushed to bolster their front seven depth. From signing defensive tackle Michael Pierce to a three-year deal to selecting former Michigan outside linebacker David Ojabo in the second round of the draft, they went all out to retool the group.

For now, it remains to be seen on whether Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta has any moves planned to rejuvenate the team's linebacker depth ahead of the season.
