Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow had been having one of the most impressive breakout campaigns in baseball in 2019 before suffering a right forearm strain that would send him to the Injured List.

However, Glasnow will begin a rehab assignment with the Durham Bulls on Monday:

Glasnow got off to a torrid start this season. After the Rays acquired him from the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of the Chris Archer trade at last year's trade deadline, Glasnow opened with four straight wins in 2019.

Through his first eight starts, Glasnow was 6-1 with a 1.86 ERA to go along with a 10.2 K/9 mark and a dazzling 0.910 WHIP. However, Glasnow experienced some discomfort in a May 10 start against the New York Yankees, and the Rays shut him down indefinitely.

Glasnow was expected to return sometime in August, but he experienced a setback during his rehabilitation that moved the timeline back over a month. That said, it appears he has progressed enough to make his first rehab start, and the Rays will monitor his performance and condition very closely.

Tampa Bay has had to get very creative with the rotation this season. Though Charlie Morton is having a Cy Young-caliber season and Yonny Chirinos established himself as a reliable option, injuries to Glasnow, Chirinos and Blake Snell have depleted manager Kevin Cash's starting group. As such, the Rays have used an “opener” in nearly one-third of their games.

The Rays are in a dead heat with the Oakland Athletics for the second Wild Card spot in the American League. A healthy Glasnow would go a long way toward increasing their playoff chances.
