The Boston Red Sox have placed Trevor Story on the 10-day injured list due to his right hand contusion injury, the team announced on Saturday. Boston opted to call up catcher Connor Wong from Triple-A Worcester to fill the second baseman's spot on the active roster.

This call from the Red Sox is retroactive to July 13, which could mean that Story may be available to make his return to action as soon as the team’s July 23 home game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Story missed the Red Sox’s last three games after being hit on his right hand by an 89 mph sinker from starting pitcher Corey Kluber in Boston’s 3-2 road defeat to the Tampa Bay Rays last Tuesday. Red Sox manager Alex Cora elected to remove the veteran second baseman from the game and have Jeter Downs finish off the at-bat.

There was some optimism that Story would receive the green light to return to Boston’s lineup for its road clash against the New York Yankees on Saturday. Cora noted on Friday that the team would “see how he feels during the day.” But in the end, the decision has been made to rule out Story for at the least the team’s next three contests.

Story’s IL stint comes as he has had a roller-coaster campaign in his debut season with the AL East powerhouse. He left Tuesday’s encounter against the Rays with a .205 batting average in 12 games played in July.

In Story’s place, Downs is expected to be the Red Sox’s starter out at the second base position. The rookie infielder failed to record a hit over 11 at-bats in Boston’s last three games. Overall, he sits at a .158 batting average in seven total games played this season.

The Red Sox will cap off their first half schedule with a pair of upcoming road clashes with the Yankees.
