The Boston Red Sox struck out on a big splash when Freddie Freeman signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Sox had been in pursuit for a while but ultimately lost the star first baseman to the flashy team in his home state.

Now that Freeman is heading to the West Coast, the Red Sox are pivoting to a plan B. According to MLB Network's Jon Heyman, they are now looking at signing shortstop Trevor Story, who would likely have to move to second base if he joins.

Story, a two-time All-Star with the Colorado Rockies, hit 24 home runs and stole 20 bases last season while posting a slash line of .251/.329/.471 last season. As one of the best hitters at his position, he would be a strong addition to the Red Sox. He also has a history of being a very good defender, though he was not as impactful last season.

Xander Bogaerts, Boston's current star shortstop, might benefit more from moving to second base than Story since he is the inferior defender of the two. Bogaerts has dismissed the possibility of a position change, though he may change his mind if he's doing it for a fellow star. The Red Sox could still move Story over a spot and let their franchise star remain in place as Bogaerts' hitting makes up for his defensive shortcomings plenty.

However Boston looks to use Bogaerts and Story together, they should make a strong push for him. Their division could be very strong next season with the Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees all looking like solid teams. Missing out on Freeman stings but they can still make a big splash.
