The Cincinnati Reds take on the Seattle Mariners. Our MLB odds series has our Reds Mariners prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Reds Mariners.

On April 15, it is too early to panic, but it's not too early to be quietly concerned. The Seattle Mariners did not start their 2022 season well. They were in huge trouble in early June, playing two bad months of baseball before winning 14 straight games and transforming the course of their season. They made the playoffs in spite of their bad start.

In 2023, however, the Mariners again started slowly. This time, they weren't able to make the playoffs. This is unsustainable in Seattle. The Mariners can't keep digging a hole for themselves in the first few months of the season and expect to win 65 percent of their games from late June through September to make the playoffs. The margin for error is too small. Yet, after losing a series to the Chicago Cubs this past weekend at home — which comes after losing a road series to the Toronto Blue Jays — the Mariners are several games under .500 and have to fight uphill to work their way back into playoff contention. They really need to get to .500 as soon as possible and steadily improve their position in the spring so that the odds — and games — are not stacked against them when they get into the heart of summer. This series against the Cincinnati Reds needs to be the start of something good. If the Mariners sink a little more, their ship won't reach safe harbor in the Pacific Northwest.

Why The Reds Could Cover The Spread

The Reds are coming off a sweep of the Chicago White Sox in which they dominated all three games. Cincinnati strolled to an 11-1 win on Friday, a 5-0 victory on Saturday, and an 11-4 triumph on Sunday. That's a complete weekend of winning baseball, with elite hitting and very strong pitching. The Reds averaged nine runs per game and allowed an average of 1.7. It doesn't get much better than that. Those are “peak Atlanta Braves or Los Angeles Dodgers” numbers, an imposing level of performance in which games were pretty much over after the third or fourth inning. The Reds are on a roll, and they can carry what they did in Chicago to Seattle, where the Mariners — as noted above in our opening comments — are laboring. Seattle is struggling to score, but it's more than that. The Mariners strike out a lot. They beat the ball into the ground in fly-ball situations. They don't have a strong top-to-bottom batting order. The Reds can definitely limit the Mariners' bats and win without their best offensive game. Merely five runs — not the 11 the Reds scored on Friday and Sunday in Chicago — might be enough to cover the spread.

Why The Mariners Could Cover The Spread

The Mariners are not playing well right now, and that might be a good reason to pick against them. However, they are going to have more urgency in this game, knowing they need to pick it up and improve quickly. Also, as well as Cincinnati played over the weekend, the Reds feasted on the absolutely awful White Sox, who have just two wins in the first two and a half weeks of the season and might lose 110 games this year. The Mariners will give the Reds a reality check.

Final Reds-Mariners Prediction & Pick

This is a great bounce-back spot for the M's, coming off two losses with bad hitting. The Reds pummeled the White Sox. They will come back down to earth here. Take Seattle.

Final Reds-Mariners Prediction & Pick: Mariners -1.5
