The Washington Redskins' emerging name change has been the talk of the town in recent weeks. This came after the racism issues in the American society amidst the Black Lives Matter movement. NFL legend Darrell Green has spent 20 seasons with the franchise and for him, it is already time to change the name of the team.

Green spoke about the matter on an interview with WTOP's Dave Johnson:

“I applaud [owner] Daniel Snyder for making this decision,” said Green. “I think that is the right decision. I think that it’s part of the tapestry in the nation of what I call the reconciling of history that has taken place. There are people who have been offended for so many years and that pain needs to be addressed. I’m glad that we can begin this process.”

Green, who holds Redskins’ franchise record of 295 games played, understands the strong links many fans have to a team name that has lasted 87 years.

As for the team’s new name, Green shared the same sentiment with sophomore quarterback Dwayne Haskins. They both favor the Red Tails, which was a nickname given to the Tuskegee Airmen, the first Black aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

New head coach Ron Rivera will try to lead his team to bounce back from a lowly 3-13 record last season. They will attempt to join the playoff party once again after a 13-year absence.

Fans of the Washington-based team along with the rest of the league are awaiting the new identity that the franchise will be going with for the upcoming season.
