Washington Football Team running back Derrius Guice was recently arrested and charged with counts of strangulation, assault, battery, and destruction of property. These acts stemmed from three separate domestic violence incidents that had taken place at his residence earlier this year.

Guice's attorney spoke on behalf of the player and publicly released the party's statements:

“Derrius has continued to work excitedly hard to contribute to the Washington Football Team and was expected to be a key player this season, yet he was released without a single question as to what occurred,” Guice's attorney said in part.

“Derrius will defend these charges in court, where a full vetting of the allegations will take place, in contrast to actions by local law enforcement and the Washington Football Team that assumed the worst, directly contradicting every sense of fairness and due process.”

Guice had a prolific three-year run with collegiate powerhouse LSU. He earned inclusions in the first-team All-SEC in 2016 and second-team All-SEC in 2017. He went on to be drafted by Washington with the 59th pick in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Guice was expected to head into his third campaign with the team. Despite being a considerably high draft pick, he still hasn't been able to contribute much to the team's offense due to his long absences. An ACL injury abruptly ended his rookie season while an MCL sprain derailed his sophomore year.

Both Guice and the Washington Football Team have yet to catch a break in a series of tumultuous events. The team's unheralded offensive players should step up to fill in the spot vacated and contribute to the cause of a rebuilding team.
