Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith's comeback story serves as an inspiration to many football fans across the world.

He reached another step closer to making it back to the gridiron after he was recently activated off the PUP list. However, Smith does not yet have full control over his right foot, which is why he wears a sleeve and brace on his leg. It could become a serious concern once he gets back to full-contact practice.

Dr. Robin West shared her sentiments on Alex Smith's situation to the Washington Post:

“We [told Smith]: ‘ You can go play. You can do whatever you want. Now, are you at higher risk for something else for your knee or your ankle?” West said “Potentially. You're playing a contact sport where it's a very, very high-risk sport.' I mean how many times does a guy sprain his ankle and then he tears his ACL the next week? We see that a lot.”

Alex Smith recently made strides in his recovery as he can now plant his foot and make throws, but he still doesn't have dorsiflexion, which is used to flex the foot up when walking or running.

Washington head coach Ron Rivera assured that Smith will be in contention for the starting quarterback spot if he continues his progression and manages to stay healthy. The other members of the quarterback room include sophomore Dwayne Haskins, former Carolina Panther Kyle Allen, and undrafted rookie free agent Steven Montez.

Smith's future in the gridiron and his role with the team will be clearer once training camp progresses in the following weeks.
