Jay Gruden is doing his very best to hype up those Washington Redskins.

While wrapping up his team’s final day of mandatory minicamp, Gruden boldly confessed he believes these 2018 Skins “have more firepower than ever,” via Kimberley Martin of the Washington Post.

“I believe that we have more firepower than ever,” he said following the team’s final mandatory minicamp practice. (In keeping with tradition, Gruden ended veteran minicamp a day early and gave players Thursday off.) “Not to say that the teams in the past didn’t have any. I just feel good about our depth and the weapons that we have once they become healthy.”

Gruden, 51, is entering his fifth season in D.C. as sideline boss for the Skins. With a below average record of 28-35-1, the upcoming year should look much different than the prior few.

The quarterback has changed hands.

Out is Kirk Cousins and in is Alex Smith. Around him remains most of the same cast of characters such as tight end Jordan Reed and wide receivers Jamison Crowder and Josh Doctson. Who’s new is probably what’s grabbing Gruden’s eye. His name is rookie Derrius Guice.

Though all the talent, Gruden understands he must improve in the area of clock-management.

“I’ve got to do a much better job,” he said, before rattling off his missteps in rapid succession. “I could’ve called better games. Maybe used a timeout here or there. There’s a lot of things I could have done. You always second-guess yourself. Throw the ball when you ran it. Gone for it on fourth down against the Saints. Call a better play on third and 1 so they don’t get the ball back to [Drew] Brees, where he goes down and goes for two. That’s the game right there.”

We’ll find out for sure if Jay Gruden’s team is, indeed, loaded when they take on the Arizona Cardinals in the desert on Sept. 9 during Week 1 action.
