The Washington Redskins managed to secure their potential franchise quarterback in Dwayne Haskins with the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. It appears he still has a long way to go before surpassing quarterbacks Case Keenum and Colt McCoy in the eyes of head coach Jay Gruden.

Gruden has indicated that he would ideally like to name a starter following the third preseason game. According to Albert Breer of The MMQB, he stated Haskins still has some ground to cover behind Keenum and McCoy:

Jay Gruden told me he wants to make a QB decision after the 3rd preseason game — at the latest — to give the starter time to prep for Philly. Gruden said Dwayne Haskins is still chasing Colt McCoy and Case Keenum, but has time to catch them. More on that in tomorrow's MMQB.

Haskins got his first taste of NFL action after making his debut in the team's loss to the Cleveland Browns in the preseason opener. The rookie certainly endured an eventful night after completing 8-of-14 passes for 117 yards and two interceptions while tacking on 17 rushing yards.

Haskins' numbers suggest that it was a disappointing outing. However, there is no denying that there were flashes of promise. At this point in the year, this is exactly what Washington is looking for.

They managed to secure some much-needed depth under center this offseason with the acquisition of Keenum. His experience as a starter and McCoy's knowledge of the offense provide Washington with some stable options while they look to take a patient approach with Haskins' development.
