The Washington Redskins are handling the Trent Williams situation in a different way. Rather than trade him, give him a better contract, or attempt to patch over differences, they are fining him $40,000 for every training camp missed.

According to a league source via Pro Football Talk, Williams doesn't care about the fines. The source said:

Williams doesn’t care. Williams believes (perhaps correctly) that the team will never be able to collect the fines if Williams never plays for them again, since there will be no game checks from which they can withold the fines.

According to PFT's Mike Florio, the Redskins could “pursue $1.62 million from Williams, which is the amount of unearned signing bonus remaining on his current contract.” But, if traded or cut, they cannot recoup bonus amounts, as noted by the analyst.

Williams' contract dispute isn't all about his contract, which is worth nearly $30 million over the next two seasons, with a hair under $7.5 million guaranteed. It's about the medical situation with the team. The Redskins had previously mishandled a growth on Williams' body in the offseason. Last year alone, Alex Smith and Derrius Guice faced infections from their surgically repaired lower-body injuries.

A Pro Bowler for seven consecutive years, Williams is a hot commodity. The Redskins have opened up trade talks. Though 31 years old, the left tackle would be an upgrade over most teams and could be worth more than a second-round pick to some. Teams to watch in talks include the Houston Texans, Cleveland Browns, and New England Patriots.
