The Washington Redskins wide receiver group isn’t exactly star-studded. However, they have potential pieces already set. One of the most exciting one of those is Trey Quinn. The receiver was selected with the last pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. Despite that, many saw him as someone who could contribute.
Quinn proved the hype right in very limited time last year. The receiver caught nine passes on 10 targets, but missed nearly the entire season due to injury.
Now, year two is on the horizon and it appears that limited role will be expanded heavily. According to Billy Embody of 247Sports.com, Trey Quinn has the slot receiver job “locked down” for the Redskins.
“Trey Quinn’s got the inside spot pretty much locked down – [Darvin] Kidsy [Jr.] and Sims, they’re competing for the backup role probably – but we’ll wait and see,” Gruden said on Sunday. “But it’s a good group. They all bring something different to the table. I like the fact that we have a number of guys that can also go in there and block and are physical that help our running game out and we have some speed, we have some size. We have a little bit of variety there. It’s a good group.”
Jay Gruden is careful to add the “we’ll wait and see” because anything can happen in the NFL. Quinn has a lot of potential, but hasn’t proven much yet. It’s not like he’s Antonio Brown going into the year knowing his role. He still needs to prove himself.
That being said, this isn’t surprising to anyone that’s followed the Washington Redskins for the last few years. Trey Quinn impressed last season and with the receiver corps becoming even more depleted this year it seemed like a certainty that Quinn would be the slot receiver.
While the receiver corps doesn’t look all that great, they could surprise a lot of people. Quinn is one of the main reasons for that, as he has a lot of potential to be a great slot receiver. It appears he’ll get a chance to prove himself immediately.
