The Washington Football Team is set to release veteran running back Adrian Peterson. The 2012 NFL MVP spent the last two seasons in D.C. and looked to have a grip on the lead running back spot.

The report from NBCSports indicates the release to be imminent ahead of Saturday's deadline to trim the roster to 53 players.

This news comes as a minor shock, given the recent release of fellow RB Derius Guice just weeks prior. Guice was faced with domestic violence charges and was eventually cut from the roster altogether. With the move, the team will look to go much younger at the rushing position. They'll be relying on an RB room consisting of third round pick Antonio Gibson, Bryce Love, Peyton Barber, and J.D. McKissic.

Adrian Peterson may have joined Washington clearly past his prime, but he was still pretty productive in two seasons there. He rushed for 1,042 yards with seven touchdowns during his first year back in 2018. He followed that up with 898 rushing yards and five trips to the end zone the following year.

The 4-time All Pro and 7-time Pro Bowler will probably be able to latch on to another team in no time. He apparently has no plans of retiring anytime soon. Peterson recently appeared in an interview on TMZ stating his desire to play for a handful more years. His outside shot at the all-time rushing record might have something to do with it as well.

However, as it stands those years won't be in our nation's capital.
