By 2017, your typical NBA jersey will closely resemble the jerseys worn by athletes in Europe and Asia.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Darren Rovell, NBA owners are expected to pass a vote this week that will have advertisements on player jerseys before the 2017-18 season. The vote includes a 2.5-by-2.5 inch patch advertisement on the left shoulder of all team jerseys.

While talks regarding advertisements on player jerseys have been going on for awhile, discussions had been stalled due to concern that bigger-market teams would collect more lucrative sponsorship than smaller-market teams. That concern seems to have been solved as the current proposal involves a revenue-sharing pool where 50 percent of money will be split among all 30 NBA teams.

If the vote does go through, this would be monumental because none of the four major professional sports leagues in North America currently use ads on their jerseys.

Fans may not react positively to this news, but the NBA is a business first and foremost. If including ads on their jerseys means more money for the league, the NBA will do it in a heartbeat.
