The San Antonio Spurs announced the signing of shooting guard Darrun Hilliard to a two-way contract, according to Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News.

Hilliard was the 38th overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 2015 NBA Draft and was consequently signed to a three-year deal. Having broken his nose during training camp and a stress fracture on his back the following year, Hilliard bounced back and forth between the Pistons and their G League affiliate Grand Rapids Drive.

Prior to the start of the free agency period, he was traded to the Houston Rockets for cash considerations, a team which immediately sent him to the L.A. Clippers in the Chris Paul trade, who consequently waived him.

After a bouncy offseason, Hilliard was called upon to be part of Team USA's quest to qualify for the next FIBA World Games, starting with the AmeriCup. The Villanova standout was one of the few players with NBA experience and led the team in scoring with 13.4 points per game.

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich; a known international basketball aficionado, had kept a close eye on the team, snagging the lefty-shooting talent while giving him a shot to work on his game at the G League level again.

The 24-year-old swingman has averaged 3.6 points and a rebound per game through 77 appearances in the NBA.
