Dutch director Richard Raaphorst, who directed Frankenstein’s Army in 2013, claims that Capcom copied his monster designs. In a post on Linkedin, the director noted how Resident Evil Village‘s Strum, the propeller monster. Strum appears as a boss in one of Resident Evil Village‘s stages. The monster bears a strong resemblance to one of the monsters in Raaphort’s movie, with almost the exact same biology and stance.

Frankenstein’s Army fans point out more Resident Evil Village monster rip-offs

Later, a fan-made thread built upon Raaphorst’s allegations. While the director only complained about the propeller monster, the fan found even more monsters to complain about. This puts into question Capcom’s artistic integrity as the monsters do bear a striking resemblance to the monsters found in Frankenstein’s Army. Upon seeing the thread, Raaphorst replied,

“Oh dude, this is worse than I thought.” Raaphorst continued, “First, I felt angry, then proud, but now I see this, I feel sad.”

Luckily for Capcom, Raaphorst has no plans to take them to court. He says he just wishes that Capcom recognized his work and that they’d admit that they took inspiration from his designs. Perhaps Capcom’s designers had a night out watching Frankenstein’s Army and subconsciously made their designs based on them? Malicious intent or not, the designs are too similar for them to be purely coincidental, especially since it’s not just one monster, but several monsters.
