Return to Monkey Island appears to be set in an amusement park – at least at the start of the game, based on new screenshots of the game.

In what probably is a bid to establish continuity between the old and the new, Terribly Toybox has decided to put the game's first few stages set in an amusement park. This makes sense as marketing materials and other reports indicate that Return to Monkey Island will continue the story of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge.

In new screenshots for the game released by co-publishers Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games, we see the game's more modern-looking art direction, as well as some recognizable figures and locations. The setting is fairly established with the screenshots, which can be found in the article covering Adventure Gamers' interview with Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman.

The interview also talked about the initial reaction to the announcement of Return to Monkey Island last year, how the pitch to Disney went (as the game is a Lucasfilm Games IP, which is under Disney), and how Terrible Toybox is equipped to take the helm in the development of Return to Monkey Island.

The Monkey Island series is one of the most legendary ones in gaming. The series was popular during the heyday of point and click adventures. This genre, which has lied dormant for a while, is starting to make a comeback in recent years, no thanks to a whole host of nostalgia-induced players wanting to relive the good old days. Whether or not the newer, younger audience, who arguably have shorter attention spans, would take on this genre – that's something we'll soon find out when Return to Monkey Island releases later this year.
