In the world of Philadelphia sports, there are few fans who are as avid or outspoken about their love for the teams in the City of Brotherly Love than Rob McElhenney. This love was exemplified when the Always Sunny star, alongside his co-star and wife Kaitlin Olson, shared a moment with Philadelphia Phillies players Bryce Harper and Chase Utley during the MLB's London Series.

The couple was in attendance for the second game between the Phillies and New York Mets as part of the MLB's 2024 London Series, with McElhenney scheduled to throw out the game's opening pitch. However, the actor couldn't choose between Harper or Utley to catch the opening pitch when Olson came in with a creative solution.

The end result was, as the announcer put it, the first “ceremonial double-play” with Olson feeding the ball to McElhenney who tossed it to Utley and, in turn, Harper.

Superfandom

Its just another example of Rob McElhenney's avid Philly sports fandom that the public has gotten to see fairly regularly, sometimes in rather humorous ways. One such scenario saw McElhenney, by his own admission, watch the Philadelphia Eagles playoff game from Jan. 15, 2024, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers while in attendance at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Olson managed to snap a picture of McElhenney intently watching the game on his phone as everyone else around them mingled during what appeared to be a commercial break.

More recently, the Always Sunny actor seemingly threw his name out there as a potential stock holder when Eagles Jeff Lurie announced he was looking to sell a stake in the team. Rob McElhenney was quick to respond on X, simply telling Lurie to “check your dms.”

McElhenney already has some experience owning and running a sports organization, though it isn't in American football.

Wrexham! Wrexham!

The actor, alongside his friend and business partner in the venture Ryan Reynolds, purchased Welsh football club Wrexham AFC and immediately set about working to get the team promoted from the National League to EFL League after a 15 year drought. The pair's impact was almost immediate on the business-side, with the team securing several high-profile sponsors including TikTok and Aviation Gin to bring more money into the club.

McElhenney and Reynolds' ownership also bolstered the team's international exposure thanks to the actors' stardom and their docu-series Welcome to Wrexham, which followed the actors from the purchase of the team through their first full season as owners. It culminated with the season two finale which documented Wrexham's winning the 2022-2023 National League Championship and getting promoted to EFL League Two.

The team would go on to immediately secure a second straight promotion at the end of the 2023-2024 season and move up to EFL League One, with only the EFL Championship and Premiere League being the only two higher leagues in the English football league system.
