While being interviewed on The Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday in the midst of Chris Paul reportedly demanding a trade, Morey not only said that he intends to bring both Paul and James Harden back together next season, but he also thinks head coach Mike D'Antoni will be around for a while.
“He's going to be back next year. He's likely going to be our coach for the long term,” said Morey. “We know we wanna work it out. I'm not worried about it. Mike's not worried. Mike was in the office yesterday talking about everything, how we're gonna meet with free agents.”
A report surfaced earlier this month that D'Antoni and the Rockets were nearing an extension, which came about two weeks after D'Antoni reportedly broke off contract talks with Houston.
Houston is coming off of a season in which it won 53 games but was eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the Golden State Warriors, marking the fourth time in five years that the Rockets were bounced by the Warriors in the postseason.
Also, Paul and Harden's relationship has been reported to be irreparable, and you have to wonder whether or not D'Antoni is capable of leading a team to a championship, seeing as how he has never taken a squad to the finals.
