Joey Gallo has had a season to forget so far in his second campaign with the New York Yankees, and he may not receive an opportunity to turn his year around with the team.

According to USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale, the Yankees “privately believe they have no choice” but to ship off Gallo ahead of next month’s MLB trade deadline.

Gallo opened up the 2022 campaign as the Yankees’ regular starter out in left field, but manager Aaron Boone has since opted to rotate multiple players for the position, from Aaron Hicks to Marwin Gonzalez. This comes as Gallo posted a .164 batting average and a .288 OBP in the first half of the season.

Gallo may not have a shortage of suitors open to taking a chance on him in the coming weeks. The New York Post’s Jon Heyman recently noted that the San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers “are thought willing to consider” a move for the two-time All-Star. The veteran outfielder featured in his opening sevens seasons in the majors with the Rangers, and on the other hand, he was heavily linked with the Padres ahead of last year’s trade deadline.

Scott Boras, Gallo’s agent, has been well aware of the possibility of his client finding a new home in the majors by Aug. 2. He did recently mention on Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman’s “The Show” podcast that “a lot of teams” see that Gallo would be “normal than what he is” with them than how he has been with the current AL East leaders.

For now, the Yankees have much focus set on the second half of the campaign, as they currently hold the best record in the AL with a 64-29 mark.
