New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees practiced without his thumb brace on Friday and actually ran some receiving routes and caught some footballs during the workout, via Garland Gillen of FOX 8 WVUE-TV.

Brees suffered a torn ligament in his right thumb during the Saints' Week 2 loss against the Los Angeles Rams and has not played since. He is aiming to return for the team's Week 8 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.

The 40-year-old threw just five passes against the Rams before exiting. In Week 1, he completed 32 of his 43 passes for 370 yards, a couple of touchdowns and an interception in a win over the Houston Texans.

Brees is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he threw for 3,992 yards, 32 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 74.4 percent of his passes (an NFL record) and posting a passer rating of 115.7, which led the league. He made the Pro Bowl and finished second to Patrick Mahomes in MVP voting as a result.

As a team, the Saints won 13 games and captured the NFC South division title before ultimately suffering a heartbreaking loss to Los Angeles in the NFC Championship Game.

New Orleans is seeking to avenge its gutwrenching playoff exit this year and has gotten off to a great start even without Brees, as the Saints have gone 4-1 over the first five weeks, most recently defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Teddy Bridgewater has done a fine job filling in for Brees under center and will look to lead the Saints to a 5-1 start when they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road Sunday.
