Jameis Winston has been patiently waiting for the right opportunity in free agency and it appears that he'll be staying in the NFC South. According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, Winston is finalizing a deal with the New Orleans Saints.

Earlier this offseason, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to move on from Winston after five seasons with the team. Winston was the former No. 1 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, but the Buccaneers were able to replace him with Tom Brady.

Just this past season, Winston threw for a career-high 5,109 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions. Despite his career-bests in yards and touchdowns, the turnovers are what causes concerns for teams when it comes to Winston, and he'll need to improve in that area with the Saints.

During the offseason, there were multiple teams that were in need of a starting quarterback. However, those spots were quickly filled, leaving Winston with a slim chance of landing a starting job for next season.

Therefore, if Winston hoped to find a new team in 2020, he was likely going to have to accept a backup role. Luckily for him, the Saints were in the market for a backup quarterback following the departure of Teddy Bridgewater in free agency.

Of course, Drew Brees will start for New Orleans again in 2020, re-signing with the team in free agency. In addition, Taysom Hill figures to continue having a versatile role in the offense. But for Winston, he can spend a year under Brees and prepare himself for next offseason.

At 26 years old, Winston still has the potential to become a franchise quarterback in the NFL. By signing with the Saints, Winston is hoping that New Orleans can do for him what they did for Bridgewater.

While a deal appears to be finalized, it remains unclear what the specifics of the contract are.
