Being drafted by the New Orleans Saints two seasons ago, defensive end Marcus Davenport found himself on a veteran-laden team. His peers all have invaluable experiences in the league but he looks up to one particular teammate of his for motivation. That is the Saints defensive end and nine-year veteran Cameron Jordan:

“I'm trying to be better than Cam.” “Obviously he is one of the best,” Davenport said Friday, Aug. 7 during a video conference with New Orleans media. “If I can get better than Cam than I am doing something right.”

Davenport, the University of Texas at San Antonio product, had a pretty impressive sophomore campaign in 2019. He played in 13 games and recorded six sacks to go with three forced fumbles. However, a foot injury ended his season prematurely and he was forced to undergo rehabilitation to prepare for the upcoming season.

On the other hand, the veteran Cameron Jordan was already a long-tenured Saints talent. Ever since being drafted by the team with the 24th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, he has already garnered several accomplishments to celebrate for.

He was named as a member of the first-team All-Pro in 2017, and earned two-straight inclusions in the second-team All-Pro back in 2018 and 2019. The former California Golden Bear also made it to five Pro Bowl appearances thus far.

Jordan finished the 2019 season with 52 combined tackles, a career-high 15.5 sacks, one fumble recovery, and three pass deflections in 16 games started. He, along with his mentee Davenport hopes to have even better numbers in 2020.

Ultimately, the duo will aim to continue anchoring the Saints' defensive line and contribute to the Saints' cause of making a deeper playoff run in the upcoming season.
