The New Orleans Saints may have survived the fiery comeback attempt of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but it came with a huge cost: star QB Jameis Winston.

Winston suffered a scary leg injury during the first quarter of the Week 8 contest after a tackle from Devin White. As seen in the video replays of the play, the Saints QB awkwardly twisted his leg as he fell down. He had to be carted off the field and did not return, with Trevor Siemian replacing him.

In his postgame media availability, though, Saints head coach Sean Payton provided a rather concerning update on Winston's injury. According to him, the issue looks “significant.”

Is it a potentially season-ending injury? There's a possibility, as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network suggested.

Of course it is still too early to make assumptions since the Saints are expected to conduct more tests on the issue to determine the extent of the injury. However, based on Sean Payton's comments, it looks like Jameis Winston will be sidelined for some time.

Hopefully, though, Winston avoided any tear or fracture and it's not a season-ending injury. While they did win with Siemian taking over, losing their true starting quarterback midway through the season could jeopardize their Super Bowl hopes.

They got over their biggest obstacle in claiming the NFC South top seed by beating the Buccaneers, but the Saints surely can't afford to lose and falter now that they just improved their playoff chances.
