The New Orleans Saints are set to address the quarterback situation this offseason, and early indications have Jameis Winston tabbed as the favorite to return as the team's starter in 2022. While that remains a possible outcome for the free-agent QB, there's another quarterback reportedly in play for the Saints next season. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler indicated that the Saints could be interested in exploring a trade for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

“The wildest rumor I heard this week? Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo potentially pairing with New Orleans. This would be a surprise since many around the league expect Jameis Winston to return to the Saints. But if Rodgers and Wilson aren't moved, Garoppolo becomes one of the top options available. Maybe New Orleans at least kicks this idea around,” said Fowler.

Fowler did indicate that this would be a surprising move, noting that most teams around the league expect Winston to return to New Orleans. But if that doesn't play out as anticipated, the Saints could be a fit for Garoppolo, who is predicted to be traded from San Francisco in the coming weeks.

Winston had a successful stint as the Saints' starting quarterback in 2021 before his season was up-ended by a torn ACL. In his seven starts for the Saints, Winston led the team to a 5-2 record with 14 touchdown passes and just 3 interceptions. After his injury, Sean Payton was forced to rely upon the likes of Blake Bortles, Tayson Hill, Trevor Siemian, and Ian Book, none of whom impressed enough to earn a longer look as the starter. Perhaps Garoppolo could pique the interest of new head coach Dennis Allen and GM Mickey Loomis, should a deal with Winston not come to fruition.
