The Seattle Seahawks selected defensive end L.J. Collier out of TCU in the first-round (29th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. An injury to his ankle has put a damper on the excitement though.
There is some good news however, as it appears he could be ready for week 1 of the regular season.
One leftover tidbit from #Seahawks camp yesterday before I head out to #49ers practice: First-round DE LJ Collier’s ankle sprain is unusual because it’s the top of his foot, I’m told. It rarely happens, but it did for Collier. He has a legit shot at being ready for Week 1.

The Seattle Seahawks went 10-6 last season, taking a wild card spot. However, they didn't last long in the playoffs and were far from the dominant defense many were used to seeing from them.
A big part of fixing that was the defensive line. The biggest changes were at defensive end where they picked up Ezekiel Ansah and drafted L.J. Collier. Of course, Ansah has had plenty of injury issues in the past and is actually work through some stuff related to that himself right now.
Collier, on the other hand, was supposed to be the star in the making that could anchor the defense for years to come. That's still very much plausible, it's just on hold at the moment.
It's never good to hear that an injury “rarely happens”. That makes it sound foreign – like something doctors may not be able to treat perfectly. That being said, it's very positive that they already have the “legit shot” at week 1 out there. Clearly this isn't anything too complicated – it's simply something that takes a little longer to heal than a normal ankle sprain.
Week 1 is fast approaching though. Week 1 of the preseason is upon us, meaning we've got just a few weeks before the regular season begins. With that in mind, the clock is ticking for Collier to be ready for the regular season.
One thing is certain though, there's a very small chance we'll be seeing L.J. Collier in the preseason this year.
Even if he does manage to return in time, it would be wise of the Seattle Seahawks to take things slow and make sure he's ready for week 1 – that's when the real fun starts anyways.
