When the Seattle Seahawks drafted safety Tre Flowers in the fifth round, it was presumably as added insurance in case Earl Thomas was dealt. Instead, the Seahawks intend to move Flowers over to cornerback, where Pete Carroll believes he has the physical tools to succeed.

“He’s got all of the tools that you’re looking for,” Carroll said per Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune.” “He’s real long. He’s feet are really quick and light and he’s got terrific speed. And he’s already shown all of the abilities to make the plays by playing safety for all of those years, the tackles, the hits and the plays on the ball and all of that. … He showed like he really understood right off the bat. So it was a very good demonstration of what the future could hold. I was really pleased with that.”

Flowers hasn’t played cornerback since high school, so he will obviously need time to transition. Carroll himself acknowledges that patience will be key with Flowers. But the incoming rookie has the physical attributes that Carroll likes in his corners and shares some similarities with one Richard Sherman.

Flowers (6-3) is as tall as Sherman, who was also picked in the fifth round. He also has longer arms and a faster 40-yard dash than the three-time All-Pro corner. It will be a different challenge to convert a safety into the next Richard Sherman, but if anyone can get it done, it’s Carroll.

Flowers will now join a Seahawks cornerback depth chart which includes the recently re-signed Maxwell, Shaquil Griffin, Justin Coleman, Dontae Johnson, and C.J. Smith.
