During the Philadelphia 76ers' 101-91 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night, Sixers rookie Ben Simmons recorded triple-double No. 11 on the season and also joined legendary point guard Oscar Robertson as the only rookies ever to have at least five triple-doubles in one calendar month.
According to a tweet from Kevin Negandhi of ESPN, Simmons achieved the feat during the third quarter of Friday night's contest.
“Ben Simmons with his 11th triple-double of the season and 5th triple-double in March,” Negandhi tweeted. “The only other rookie in NBA history with 5 triple-doubles in a calendar month – Oscar Robertson (7).”
In just 27 minutes of action on the night, Simmons finished with 13 points on six-of-11 shooting from the field, 12 rebounds, 11 assists, two blocked shots, and one steal.
“I think everybody just needed to step up and that's what we did in the third,” Simmons said after the win. “Obviously the second rotation needed to do the same thing, and I think we're finishing off games a lot better than we were.”
Simmons' postgame interview with reporter Molly Sullivan of NBC Sports Philadelphia, which included a message from the rookie guard to Sixers injured star center Joel Embiid, can be viewed below.
