Despite already having a number of big men in their lineup, the Philadelphia 76ers have invited veteran Emeka Okafor to join their training camp and have the chance to compete for a roster spot, according to Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype. The exact terms of the contract he signed were not disclosed, per team policy.

The 34-year-old Connecticut product was the second overall pick back in the 2004 Draft, following his impressive career in college. He was named the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player, and his success continued in the NBA when he won the Rookie of the Year Award, and was also included on the All-Rookie First Team in 2005.

Okafor last played  in the league in the 2012-13 season, as he was forced to sit out the following campaign due to a herniated disc in his neck. Although he recovered from it on schedule, he did not generate a lot of interest from teams, and he remained a free agent, as he still felt some lingering effects from it. Last summer, he made it known that he was eyeing an NBA comeback, but ultimately decided to delay his return sometime this year, after he is fully cleared to resume basketball activities. He finally received his clearance back in May, and is now getting the opportunity to be part of the league again.

Although it is a tall order for him to make the final cut, especially with the Sixers already having Joel Embiid, Dario Saric, Richaun Holmes and Jahlil Okafor in their power forward and center rotation, he could give them a run for their money and make the training camp even more competitive. There's also a small chance he could get signed, depending on how he performs after not being part of an NBA team for four years.
